New Harry Potter TV Shows Announced For HBO Max, But Not The New Scripted Series

Warner Bros. has announced two new Harry Potter TV shows, but neither of them is the rumored live-action series. The new shows include an unscripted quiz show and a retrospective special for HBO Max, Cartoon Network, and TBS later this year.

The untitled hour-long quiz show will take place over four consecutive days later this year, wrapping up with a fifth show–a 20th anniversary retrospective special celebrating Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Casting for the quiz show is open now for people aged 14 and older through the Wizarding World website. “For fans who have always wanted to discover what it might be like to take the O.W.L. exams, this is as close as they are going to get!,” Warner Bros. executive Tom Scheim said.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that J.K. Rowling is “not directly involved” with the quiz show or the retrospective special, but WB collaborated with her on them.

As for the new scripted live-action Harry Potter series, it was previously reported that discussions with potential writers regarding ideas have been explored. However, nothing is nailed down yet, and the discussions appear to be only exploratory at this stage. The Hollywood Reporter said conversations are “still in the extremely early stages and no deals have been made.”

Harry Potter isn’t the only gigantic franchise celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, as 2021 also marks the two-decade anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Outside of film, this is also the 20th anniversary of Xbox and GTA III.
